Transcript:
The wild turkey is supposed to be a truly elusive bird — wary of sound and predator, swift of wing and one tough bird to hunt.
My daughter's boyfriend, an hunting fanatic, has spend many a fruitless hour disguised in camouflage, sitting motionless in the bush, while waiting for one of those big birds to get close enough to bag.
I am beginning to think, however, that these birds must know when the hunting season is on, and the boundaries of the territory where they cannot be hunted at all.
Why? Because they're everywhere. And, not only are they everywhere, they seemed damned near tame.
The other day, for example, I had to stop my truck on the South Baptiste Lake Road, up Bancroft way, to allow about a dozen of these birds follow their rooster across the road.
Were they bothered by my presence? Not in the least? In fact, they were totally non-perplexed.
Did they take flight when I honked my horn?
Nope. In fact, they did even flutter a feather.
So, I took out my cell phone and took three or four pictures from my car window.
Unhurried pictures.
If I had a shotgun instead of a camera , I could have bagged at least half of them.
But you can't hunt them up my way, regardless of whether they're in season or not — and they're not.
It's as if these turkeys seem to know.
And they're gobbling it up.
