When Mike Miller emailed me earlier this week about how today's show might touch upon idiots — my word, not his — driving their vehicles onto the ice, only to slip into the cold, deep beyond, I had a flashback that scared the bejeebers out of me.
Again.
Once upon a time, when I was young and stupid, and therefore fearless, I drove my brand-new Jeep Cherokee onto the ice on Baptiste Lake.
And worse, I did it sober, meaning I didn't even have a lame excuse of being to drunk to think.
What an idiot.
Did I go through the ice? No, I didn't.
But the ice was breaking away behind me and, if not for a bit of speed and a lot of luck, that brand-new Jeep would have been swimming with the fishes some 100 feet below.
And probably me, too.
I heard a lot of stories after that about idiots who were just as foolish — some who didn't live.
I heard, as well, that going fast is the last thing to do if you have a car or truck on the ice because going fast forces the water under the truck or car to move forward in tidal-wave fashion.
Ergo, instead of busting the ice behind you, it bust through the ice in front of you.
And this, if true, is certainly not good.
At the time, I wasn't so worried about what my insurance company would say. I was more worried about the smirk on the undertaker's face.
Undertakers, after all, always get the last laugh. |
