The deer hunt up in my next of the woods is about to enter its second week, so it is still a bit early to get an accurate body count.
My hope is that every hunter with a tag gets his or her Bambi or its doe-eyed doe, so rife are the white tail up here that they appear at almost every turn in the road.
Two of my neighbours, in fact, have recently installed electric fences to protect their cedar hedges, so careful where you stop to take a leak.
The best place for an accurate assessment of the local wildlife, though, is at the local auto-body shop, and so I turned to Larry Anderson of Bancroft Auto Body for a recent head count.
His lot, in fact, is chock-a-block with damaged vehicles — all because of vehicular run-ins with Mother Nature's friends of the forest.
Yes, the road kill the boys were talking about last week's show.  This week? Get this.
One black bear, one elk, one moose, seven deer and, believe it or not, one raccoon.
The coon, in fact, caused $2,400 to the car that strained it through its grill.
As reported here before, I once had $8,000 in  damage done to my truck when a white-tailed deer turned DOA on my bumper.
The deer season, by the way, is like Christmas to north country auto-body shops.    If you are lucky enough to get away with a head kill, then there is also venison for the table while your car gets bent back into shape.
