Today in the 4th of July, so why not talk about Americans.
I came across one the other day while shooting the breeze with Richard Strohmayer, owner of the best lure house in Bancroft — a little bait and gun shop across from the Tim Hortons at the edge of town called Lock, Stock and Barrel.
It's a great name, don't you think?
Anyhow, it turns out that this chap, up here on vacation from New Jersey, has been renting a cottage on Baptiste Lake right across the bay from where I hang my fishing poles.
And he claims to have caught a 30-pound lake trout when, during the 25 years I have lived and cottaged on Baptiste Lake, I have never seen one — not one — that has been over 12 pounds.
Maybe 30 lbs. in the States is 10 lbs. here.
Now, I am not saying my new friend from New Jersey was exaggerating, but methinks anyone who caught a 30 lb. lake trout — undoubtedly a record of some sort for Baptiste Lake — would come armed with pictures, and would be banging down the door of the local newspaper for a little write-up.
But no, this fish was now fillets.
He claimed to have caught this lunker by loading up a fishing line with split shot — yes, split shot — and then jigging down to a depth of 70 feet with a nothing more than a minnow on a hook.
It's a technique I have yet to use.
I have obviously been wasting my time.
