Let's me totally upfront about this: I love moose. As a matter of fact, I think the moose should be Canada's national animal — not the horrid beaver which, unfortunately, is my fault that it actually is Canada's national animal.
But that's another story. Look it up.
Out there in cyberspace, I have a blog which is called Moose Country, comprised of the weekly radio commentaries I deliver on Moose-FM, the radio network north of the 905 that makes up most of cottage country.
I have even burned moose dung incense.
So it really ticked me off the other day when I got a press release telling of eight men up in my neck of the woods — their names familiar — being fined a total of $30.000 for poaching moose.
The leader of the pack, Lionel Towle of Whitby, and a member of the Bear Shanty Hunt Camp south of here, pleaded guilty in court to killing a bull moose and a cow moose without a licence, of illegally transporting his kill, of making a false statement to the MNR boys, and of displaying a void licence.
He got the heftiest fine — $9,000 — had to forfeit his rifle, and was banned from hunting for two years. Richard Towle of Bancroft was hit with a $6,000 fine; Craig Towle of Cavan with a $2,000 fine; and sidekick Deane Card of Bancroft with a similar kick to the wallet.
To me, poaching — especially poaching the majestic moose — is worst than stealing from the poor box, and gives a bad name to all hunters.
These men should hang their heads in shame.
