Mike and I just finished another Fish’n Canada shoot, this time with the “Fishmaster” Steve Hardcastle. Our intentions were to get out and fish Lake Ontario for early season Chinook Salmon, more commonly referred to as Springs or Kings. Steve charters out of St Catharines every spring and has been tearing up the water so to speak for the past bunch of seasons.
The day before the shoot I talked to Steve and of course he had the bad news that the fish have all moved deep… about 150 feet! I said “can we still try it?” and he said lets go for it.
The proceeding days had strong winds really churning up Lake Erie which in turn empties into Lake Ontario via the Niagara so the water had some color to it. The good thing was there was a few various mud-lines created. A mud-line basically is a separation of dirty to cleaner water. If you want a great day on the water for Salmon, Trout, Walleye or Catfish, get in touch with The Fishmaster Steve Hardcastle, when the going gets tough, he finds em!

No.1 nice lakers well Pete, we were fishing for the same fish half the country appart...and you guys whooped my butt!!! lol i had only one hit fishing for lakers here in New Brunswick. i was trying a similar technic, using a jet diver to smuck against the bottom and several different baits, from dead suckers (no live bait allowed) to swim baits to spoons. nada! oh well, maybe next time i'll stick to the spoons. when you say you went shallower, just how shallow? I wanted to say thanks for the tip to you and Steve, I caught one of my biggest channel cat (so far!) 10lbs. My profile picture is the fish I caught. No.3 Untitled That's awesome, big cats are a riot... especially when they're over 10 pounds. Congratulations & well done! Pete Submitted by bowrod, Administrator • 2009-07-13 09:43:34 |
