Here is a shot of my nephew Cody (wifes side) with his Scugog monster. Actually the story is pretty cool. Cody was going ice fishing with his cousin Justin to Simcoe… no wait… Quinte… ah hell they ended up on Scugog. I asked them if they had gear and of course they said yeah, but when I asked them specifics “actually we could use those”!!!
I sent them off with some rods, reels, a tip up, a sled with the essentials and oh yeah, my power auger. I thought that was quite ironic since they’re both big, young, strong oxen that could spin a hand auger through 9” in seconds but hey if it’s got a motor and it’s young dudes that your dealing with; “that’s frikkin’ awesome, we’ll take it!”
The wife, kids and I were out for the day and all of a sudden the cell phone rings, Codie’s nearly in hysterics and he sends us a picture of his Muskie. Freaked him right out, he loved it! You got to like the youth and camera phones, they (phones) take s#*$$% pictures but at least you have a record of the day. When I went out as a young lad, you had to bring the crappy little camera, make sure film was in it and then wait 6 months before you had them developed. He caught the fish, took the picture and we were looking at it before the fish probably knew it was released!!!
Anyways, I think a great message can be read into on this blog. Here are 2 young guys, Justin an avid angler and Cody an occasional angler loving our sport in the dead of winter. My point is if you get the chance to help someone (especially kids or young adults) out with gear, advice or anything, go for it. It will ultimately bring them or keep them into the sport we all love.
By the way, their going out again this weekend! Good luck you pair of punks and don’t screw up my auger…

Just as an update; the boys went back to Scugog and fished some kind of derby. Justin won over a hundred bucks for a small perch... not a bad cheque. Now since he was using my gear I wonder how much the rental fee should be!!!

Pete is right... if you take the small amount of time to help out a young angler you may just be doing them the biggest favour of their lives... When i was about 11 or 12 years old Pete, Ang, and Reno all signed some cards for me for my b-day, they even sent me an autographed hat and pete included a White Spinnerbait to use in Ottawa and around White Lake. I wore that hat everyday because to me theese guys are my idols, and although i eventually lost my fav spinnerbait to a log on Bottom, it kept me fishing for years to come. Taking the time out of your day has put soo much inspiration in my life that it kept me out of all the troubles i could have gotten mixed up in. And now when my son is a lil older i will be able to share the same experiences with him as i have had the oppourtunities to have. Helping out a young angler can make a difference. And i am a good example of that.

I gotta' love that story Jason! I was the same as you. I have always had fishing in my life however once those teenage years were there, it was bad news (more like stupidity). Fortunately through "good luck" things changed around and I was back to fishing. That really brought my dad and I together in a bond that is truly amazing. Keep your kid on the right path and you will have many great days with him. No.4 Untitled
good point/kids are our fishing future we should take whenever we get a chance and teach them cach and release.it keeps them away from all the bad things kids are exposed to on the streets....its great to see there big smiles to once they cach a fish. No.5 Untitled
Not only on the streets but at home i.e. video games. I love good graphics etc but some of these games are brutal, especially for younger kids like mine. I've heard the new Nintendo Wii fishing game is awesome though. That's the kind of game that kids should be exposed to. They get the feel of it and then take it to the water. No.6 Untitled
Hey bowrod, the Wii fishing game is actually great fun, pretty good graphics and the controllers are used as if you were using a rod and reel...I also agree that we need to get the kids off the video gaming console sometimes and out on the water or ice fishing with us!!!! I recall my Dad tried for years to get me and my three brothers into fishing with no luck, we were too interested in other sports (baseball, hockey, golf)...Now, three out of four of us, you can not get the fishing rod out of our hands!!!! I hear there\'s a few fishing Wii games. Which one have you got?
Your story of your brothers is great and quite typical. Sometimes it takes time to make a person realize that fishing is a sport, hobby, fun activity etc and it\'s great for people to get together and take it to what ever level they deem necessary.
Enjoy the family outings, I know I do!

Bowrod, we have the Rapala Tournament Fishing game, I know there are others, haven't tried them, this one from what I understand is the most fun though!!! You definitely gotta give it a try!!! Always will enjoy the family fishing outings... No.9 If I scratch your back, please don't scratch my eyes out in ret
I've recently encountered a slight problem (I'm sure fixable with time) with some of the youth pertaining to fishing. In my original story I told Codie (18 yr old nephew) he could borrow my stuff etc. Since then he's used it 2 or 3 weekends which is not a problem at all. The problem is he has left the gear lying around or in the wrong place; says he's waiting for it to thaw out. That's a good idea however I think that weeks in a warm room will get most snow off of anything (he set my auger in the garage against the wall but has yet to put it back in a totally other room... where it came from). He also left the sled with gear in the middle of the floor. As an experiment I set it outside the garage door (where he could see it) and it literally filled with snow. Finally last night he said he was going to put everything away "only" after being prompted by a note. I didn't check yet. By the way, he's only putting the gear away because he's leaving today to Manitoba for trade school. Put your tools away you young @$%$^ or you'll flunk!!!
I do know what it's all about though, we were all young and still to this day I get the odd slack moment. I do love the idea of helping new anglers out and I will continue to do so but man it's frustrating to not get back the help that was given in the first place.
Please help a brother out here readers, what can we do to make them appreciate the help???
Anyways, good luck in school neph-punk, have a great time, chase lots of babes and PASS you maroon!!!
