Opening Bass 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Finally all of our fishing seasons are open, with Bass being the last one. Man it’s a long wait from November to the end of June!

Normally Mike Miller and I fish the Casey Cup (Bassmania, CSFL) but our Princecraft wasn’t ready for the event. So instead, I headed up to the cottage to put a bit of time on the water. Fishing was actually pretty good, no giants but consistent (biggest one around 4lb). The water temps ranged from 67 – 69 degrees F, the fish were well off the spawn and finished guarding fry. That said, they still weren’t super aggressive; probably in a week or two.

I caught my fish (all Largemouth) on 5” Yamamoto Senko’s, Whacky rigged finesse worms and a 4” Roboworm SourPuss with a light tungsten weight. I used everything from 8 to 20 pound line in mono, flouro and braid. I tried the Jig & Pig and quickly changed off of it once I had a cou.

Getting the opening day first Bass is all well and fun however the highlights of my weekend were definitely my boys Hunter and Cole catching and enjoying Largemouth, Smallmouth and Rockbass! They’re really getting on to the fishing and especially the releasing. I’m pretty sure the boys are already addicted, especially Cole (the youngest), he’s just nuts about it!

One of the weirdest happenings of the day was as I was fishing a back bay I heard a commotion about 150 yards away. There was constant splashing and I could see objects coming out of the water every now and then. Upon a closer look, I found 2 big Snapping Turtles face to face which I presume were mating. I couldn’t believe how much noise a pair of slow moving reptiles could make, but then… look what they were doing!

Our latest Fish’n Canada adventures has brought us to British Columbia and Northern Ontario.

Late May had us flying to Vancouver Island to Kenzies Fishing Adventures on the Cowichan River for some amazing fishing. First up was a Brown Trout drift fishing show which I hosted down the Cowichan… which is a gorgeous stretch of river. Both Spinfishing and Flyfishing are the norm here but I opted for spinning gear. Some of the drifts were quick and some were slow so casting accuracy certainly came into the equation.

I hit lots of Browns and Rainbow in all sizes using mostly Alligator Spoons and small Minnowbaits. The difficulty was it’s a barbless fishery and when a trout decides to spin or jump… you definitely loose fish. I lost a bunch but in the end, I boated a nice variety of both species with a couple of beauty Browns!

Location 2 was Shawnigan Lake for Smallmouth Bass hosted by Ang and Mike. They wailed on shallow fish on docks and beds. Yamamoto Tubes and Shad Shape Worms turned most of the fish. We were again accommodated with a Princecraft Boat/Merc Motor from the kind folks at Cascade Marine in Chilliwack (if you’re in the market for any marine products, please check them out). Ang and Mike ended up with another amazing BC Bass show with lots of 4+ pounders!

A huge thanks goes out to Kenzie and Kyt for their great guiding, awesome hospitality and outstanding accommodations.

Part 2 of the trip had us on the mainland of BC and back to Above and Beyond, our home away from home when we travel west. D and Dana as usual put on a first class operation for us! I think I can talk for the rest of the crew in saying “we love you gals!”

As far as the fishing was concerned, Mike hit the Fraser River for yet another fantastic Sturgeon show with Vic Carrow of STS Guiding in Mission. Vic is “the premiere Sturgeon Guide” on the Fraser. Mikey caught lots of fish and ended the show with a 6’10” behemoth that even gave our big co-host a major work out!

Part 2 of this leg of the trip had Angelo and Vic up the Pitt River fishing for Bull Trout; a relatively unknown species to the general public. The scenery was the most stunning part of this shoot. Snow capped mountains in the background, beautiful green forest in the near distance and a beautiful cold water river under Ang & Vics feet! Believe it or not, the Trout are just an added bonus.

They had a great day which was anchored by Angelo bringing in a beauty 7+ pound Bull.

All in all BC was an outstanding success.

Thanks to BC Tourism and BC Ferries for their assistance in putting this shoot together.

Our next adventure took us to Hearst Air’s Pym Island outpost on the Attawapiskat River for Walleye and Pike. As timing rules everything, the Mayfly hatch was in full swing so the Walleye fishing was tougher than we expected. That said, we still caught enough to eat Walleye fillets for the entire trip; not a bad compromise! (by the way, we have been told by many sources when the Walleye fishing is on, it’s second to none)

The Pike fishing however… oh my god!!! Ang and I didn’t have to travel more than a couple of miles from the outpost to encounter excellent Northern action in the Attawapiskat! Tons of fish in the high 30 – 40+ inch range; very strong fish I might add! We used a variety of baits with a brown Yamamoto Saltwater Swimbait, a Spinnerbait and a huge Bass Magnet Tube being the baits of the day.

In mid day the smaller Swimbait and Spinnerbait really did the job but in the mornings, that giant tube was a perfect breakfast for the big river Pike.

Be sure to catch this “most excellent” Northern Pike episode in the fall of 2010.

In The Q Again PDF Print E-mail

Finally fishing season is upon us. Trout just opened a week ago and now Walleye on Quinte and soon to be everywhere else. I spent the Q opener with Jack from Radioworld along with his buddies Claude, Ramp (Larry) and Kenny. I knew I was in trouble when Jack emailed me at the last minute and said ” You may want to bring ear plugs. Claude and Ramp snore like 10 men!”… ouch!!!

I got there Friday night and we quickly went through a quasi game plan over some beers, ribs and junk food and decided to go out for a few hours after midnight. We boated 3 keepers & called it a night. I slid back a few more nips as to hopefully “die” through the up coming shore-a-thon. It actually ended up not too bad, I think I’ve found the solution; ear plugs + Canadian + Gibsons Sterling. Beautiful combo it is!!!

Got up the next morning and “ate them little yellow critters”… damn I love eating Walleye!

Went back out Saturday aft and caught 4 more good fillet fish along with an S-Load of little Walleye
(they’re always in the same spot every year, you would think I’d learn).

Rest of the weekend was basically the same… lots of small fish but it even got tougher than on Saturday.

All in all it was a fantastic weekend with fun had by all.

It should turn on pretty soon! By the way the water is at least 2 feet low already this season! Go to Hay Bay for now, the water is warmer and dirtier and the fish are biting.

The catch of the day was definitely the double of Perch I took on a worm harness. If you look at the image you will see just how deadly I actually am. Now if you look closely you will see that not a hook is in either fish’s mouth. That’s because I have such a good set of hands that if a fish smells my bait (bottom fish) I’ll nail the SOB, and if one’s even close (top fish) I’ll just snare/lasso them as well (not sure if I’m a poacher or a genius).

Thanks to Jack and the boys for the invite… awesome outing.

Mike and I had the honor of attending Basstalk 2010 held at Radioworld on April 11 and the event didn’t disappoint. Thumbs up go to Jack and Angelo at Radioworld for extending open arms yet again to anglers. Sure an event like this will bring in possible customers, however the real benefit goes to the buyer who got the best prices in the country and hours of top notch information from professional tournament anglers.

Speakers (see image) from across the Bass fishing map gave up information on everything from how to set up a Bassboat to tournament game plans to what, where, when, why and especially how! Everything from simple to hi-tech was covered.
Money was raised for charity as well; a great touch from the Basstalk team.

A highlight of the event was lunch… no not your ordinary hotdog & pop lunch. Sean & Mark from Black Angus Fine Meat and Game were in attendance satisfying every hungry mouth. They served awesome Smoked Bison (Montreal style), Kangaroo and Bison Sliders (mini burgers), and specialty hotdogs that blew everybody’s mind! I can see how sliders got their name… I slid  4 or 5 back in about 10 minutes… DELICIOUS! Thanks Sean.

All in all, a great event!

The speakers from left to right - Mark Kulik, Doug Brownridge, Derek Strube, Simon Frost, Dave Chong, Jack Summers & Paul Shiobata.
Navionics & Radioworld Prostaff Danny Dunn showing some of the guys the finer points of mapping.
A great audio video presentation really adds to the ticket value.
A great crowd of very enthusiastic anglers took in loads of information.
