The Fish’n Canada crew finally got to experience the hospitality and fishing at Chaudiere Lodge on the famed French River and man did it come through!!! Last Cull alumni Steve Niedzwiecki penciled us in for a few days of shooting for the up coming Fish’n Canada television season. We started out fishing Bass on the evening of our arrival. We thought that it would be predominantly a Smallie fishery but no way… there’s lots of Largemouth… lots!

We used Flipping Jigs, topwater frogs and a new bait just out, the large size of Yamamoto Flappin’ Hog. We rigged the Hog with a 3/0 Extra Wide Gap hook and a pegged tungsten worm weight for a deadly combo. Black with red and blue fleck along with Watermelon with black fleck worked great but I don’t think color was a big deal.

The next day we took a Walleye trip towards Nipissing fishing various humps that Steves guides know and on a tough day, we managed some great eaters along with a 4+ and a 5+!

One highlight of the trip though was the company of Sean Kelly of Black Angus Meats. I “think & hope” Sean enjoyed the fishing… hell every time we looked back he was fighting a fish. Thanks as well to Sean for supplying the outstanding meal that the whole lodge enjoyed!!!

The other trip highlight was spending time with the Muskol contest winners from the Home Hardware group. Darlene & Ron Armstrong from Petrolia (close to Sarnia) were the lucky dealers and they really seemed to enjoy their stay. We even had a nice evening fish with them on the big Princecraft (aside from a rogue thunder storm that only seemed to be above us). They had a day set for a guided fishing trip as well with one of the lodge’s experts and experienced true northern Ontario fishing at its best! Congratulations to Darlene and Ron, it was great meeting you.

From this trip I headed out for holidays. Believe it or not I came back to Oshawa for a day (had to go to the Megadeth/Slayer Carnage concert in Toronto) and then headed back up to almost the same location… this time Killarney. We stayed at a buddy’s place called the Sportsman Inn. This place is stunning. The amount of work that they did to renovate this 100 year old establishment is incredible! I sampled the fishing as well and as luck would have it, she was shut down! That said, I did manage a 4+ Smallie along with a bunch of smaller fish. The potential of this area for fishing is incredible. I did that on a bad day so a good day would be awesome! The best part is the scenery; driving the boat throughout the many bays and inlets is stunning. Fishing actually becomes only a part of the day.

We then headed to Sudbury for a highly anticipated visit with my relatives (no fishing believe it or not) and had an excellent time.

From there it was off to the cottage for the long weekend and the Largemouth fishing was on! Friday morning my kids and I took off firing Senko’s in all directions. Man these boys are getting’ on to the game! We boated a bunch of fish with one good one. Cole’s favorite part of it is “put em’ in the box daddy” and then throw them back later... that’s cool with me.

Saturday morning had myself along with nephew Beaner and buddy Trevor Forbes again hunting for Largemouth. We were using Senko’s and Flipping Jigs. I must have looked like a genius to Trevor because as we pulled into a bay I told him to cast to a log, in which he did and then I said “set the hook” in which he did into a beauty LM. I missed a fish in that exact spot with the boys the day before so I really “looked the part”. Unfortunately my heroic status probably dropped about half an hour later when as we were fishing a bank that was starting to look very “Smallmouthy” I said “come on, lets get out of here, there’s no Largies here, only to have Beaner set into a 4 and a halfer… I’m such a dork sometimes!!!

Sunday morning was all to myself (I figured so since I went to bed at 10 while everybody else did the campfire party thing). I headed out and had a great morning. I pulled into an area where I caught fish in the past and banged a 3 ½ on the way in, then hit it’s twin in the area I intended to fish and finally another clone on the way out. All were on a Flipping Jig & Pig with heavy duty gear! I got a bunch more small ones and called it a day to get an early drive home in the long weekend traffic.

Ya gotta’ love summer!!!

Just returned from one of our extended shoots in Northern Ontario. This trip had us accompanied by Jack Summers of Radioworld . Our first stop was a drive to the Air Dale base at Hawk Junction and a flight into Apisabigo Lake for some Walleye fishing. This is a classic, gorgeous little lake about 2X3 miles with lots of structure. The fishing was a bit tough (I think we were at the end of a Mayfly hatch, by now the fishing should be back to 100%) but we still caught loads of eating sized Walleye as well as fish up to 4+ pounds. There are many reports of fish exceeding 30 inches (10+pounds) from here. The highlight of this portion of the trip though was the hospitality that the Air Dale boys put on for us. Steve Dale flew us in and then took the time to give us the lay of the water, recommending Walleye hotspots that they have discovered in the past. Gary McMillan and son-in-law Glen were our chefs for the stay and man can Gary cook and man did we eat! All in all, it was a great trip… well except that Angelo broke his ankle on our last day there!

Apisabigo Gold!
Half shark, half Walleye!
Gary you really shouldn’t have… NOT!

Our next stop was over to Pine Portage Lodge on Kaby Lake (thanks to Air Dale for flying us directly to the lodge and Gary for the use of his 15 Mercury). This is a full blown fishing lodge (Apisabigo is an outpost camp) with all the bells and whistles. The Mayfly hatch was finished here and the summer fishing was in full swing. Again we caught loads of Walleye (we literally caught fish at every location that our guide brought us to). We found a great little hotspot on a reef that was loaded with fish but soon discovered that the 3 – 4 pounders were in a bit different area. They were close to boulders that were essentially weed free. Jigs were the ticket here. We ended the day with a 27.5”er that will make a great TV fish. Thanks to Betty and the crew for another wonderful experience in Algoma Country!

Bill and Joel doing what they do best!

Boy them car guys can really catch fish!

Let me explain. I just spent a day on the water (Lake Simcoe) with Gordon Nimeck of Raceway Chrysler (a radio sponsor of ours) and his son Chris and them Nemick boys can catch em’!

We started out fishing around Georgina Island and I believe the first fish of the day was a 5 and a half+ Smallie caught by Gord. I said “this is gonna’ be a good day”!

A good day it was.

They popped a couple more smaller fish and then things slowed down. I decided to move and what a move it was. Mr. Nemick and son proceeded to catch smallies of all sizes for the next 6 hours. It was awesome… 3 times I scooped up 2 Simcoe Smallies in the net when the boys doubled up (I love doing that).

The technique of the day was dropshotting Yamamoto Shad Shape Worms… it was dynamite!

To Gordon & Chris, thanks for the great company and giving me great practice on the net!

Thursday night and all of Friday had Mike, Ang and I at the inaugural Kaeden Brown Foundation golf tournament in the ever so populated Arkona area of somewhere in Ontario. Hats off to the board of directors of the foundation for putting on one of the classiest and pleasurable events we have ever attended.

We had a great dinner and garage party at Sporty Meadows house on Thursday night. Got to bed about 3:30 am and woke up to big George snoring up a storm on the couch at around 6:30… yeah, like we were ready to golf!!!

Did a big breakfast at some farmhouse/deercamp/bodyshop (remember, it’s Arkona) with the beautiful sounds of full sized dump trucks ripping up the gravel roads at about 50MPH (you know you’re in the country when the kids are in the yard waiting for the school bus and waving at the maniac truck drivers… “ good-morning Bill, good-morning Harry”; “morning kids… vroom with a trail of dust a kilometer long). Finally we were off to the track.

The course was excellent and in great shape (unlike us) and our teams were ready to go (unlike us) and the event was off and running (unlike us… get my point!).

I can honestly say that this was one of the most fun filled rounds of golf I have ever had. Of course my foursome helped with their great golf and diabolical practical jokes but it was the “Sisters of Mayo” that really perked us up. This wonderful group of lovely ladies could certainly be the poster group for Hellmann’s.

The highlight of the event was the fundraising… the foundation probably raised close to 50 grand!!! Well done Marty and the rest of the group.

A little post breakfast trauma… dem’ dere’ trucks run on gas dere’ Darren!!!
